چکیده
OBJECTIVE To examine histopathologic and immunohistochemical features of human corneal buttons from patients who developed keratoglobus. METHODS Nine corneal buttons were obtained during penetrating keratoplasty from patients with keratoglobus. Histologic features were examined using hematoxylin-eosin-stained sections. Immunohistochemical staining for alpha1-proteinase inhibitor, Sp1, and matrix metalloproteinases 1, 2, and 3 was performed, with 2 normal and 2 corneal sections with keratoconus as controls. RESULTS Hematoxylin-eosin staining revealed diffuse stromal thinning and focal disruptions in Bowman's layer in all keratoglobus specimens. Similar abnormal immunostaining results for alpha1-proteinase inhibitor and Sp1 were detected in keratoglobus and keratoconus at their respective active disease sites. Immunostaining for matrix metalloproteinases 1, 2, and 3 was significantly more intense in corneas with keratoglobus than in normal controls. Matrix metalloproteinase staining intensity was especially prominent in areas where the underlying Bowman's layer was disrupted. CONCLUSIONS Histological features in our keratoglobus specimens are consistent with previous reports. The similarities in immunohistochemical labeling between keratoglobus and keratoconus suggest that these entities may share common mechanisms that are involved in stromal thinning.

The Relationship between Cytokeratins 7 and 20 Expression, and Prognostic Factors in Colon Adenocarcinoma: An Immunohistochemical Study
Background & Objective: The role of synchronized expression pattern of cytokeratin (CK) 7 and CK20 in the prognosis of colon adenocarcinoma is unclear. The current study aimed at determining the relationship between the expression of cytokeratins 7 and 20 and prognostic factors in colon adenocarcinoma. Methods: In the current cr...
متن کاملCorneal thinning phenotypes: an alternative perspective.
We were very interested to read of a second mutation in the seed region of miR-184 resulting in EDICT syndrome. We were unsure after reading the paper, however, of how the corneal findings should be classified and of the statement that the family “does not demonstrate a keratoconus phenotype.” Keratoconus, the commonest disorder of corneal thinning and steepening, has been linked with VSX1 and ...
متن کاملInflammatory Pseudotumor Of The Orbit: A Histopathologic And Immunohistochemical Study Of 32 Cases
Background and Objective: Inflammatory pseudotumor is a lesion composed of proliferating spindle cells with mixed inflammatory infiltrates. Some authors have proposed the name inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor as a proper descriptive term rather than the vague inflammatory pseudotumor. The aim of this study was to verify the myofibroblastic origin of spindle cells in idiopathic orbital inf...

متن کاملHistopathological Evaluation and Analysis of Immunohistochemical Expression of Bcl-2 Oncoprotein in Colorectal Carcinoma
Abstract Introduction: Colorectal cancer is the third most prevalent malignancy with high mortality rate, necessitating markers that predict survival and guide the treatment. Previous studies have examined the immunohistochemical expression of Bcl-2, an apoptotic marker, in colorectal carcinoma, but results have been contradictory. Objectives: To evaluate the histopathological featu...
